A question about shower handle installation

Hello!
Our shower handle broke. When you pull it out to turn the water on, it works fine, but when you spin it to adjust the temperature, it is loose and would just spin and spin and spin.
I took off the front cap and unscrewed it and noticed that part of the plastic had broken off, which explains why it was broken. I got a new one but as I tightened the screw on tight, water starts coming out of the faucet. When I pull it forward and then push it back in, water still comes out. Any advice?
