Gravel vaccine?

I am new to owning fish so I'm unsure what I'm doing. When I built my four foot tank I decided I wanted a negative space of sand in the front that didn't have plants as my fish liked to sift through the sand in his old tank.
I know I shouldn't gravel vac around where the plants are (I think) but should I vac the sand area?
