When the big solar flare hits and all hard drives on earth get erased, what good stuff do you still have burned to disks?
Post Body

I often hear the theory that it's inevitable that one day a solar flare big enough to burn out most circuits and erase most magnetic media is bound to hit earth. In this post apocalyptic world the only memes to survive will be the ones burned to disks, so how rich are you gonna be when we rebuild the electronics and have nothing but optical media to restore our online culture?

This was my thinking. We won't be able to read CDs the day after the flare, but file types are more logical than for example hieroglyphics.

People manage to decode dumped ROMs into text and images somehow, they'll figure out jpgs eventually even if the standard is lost. Might wanna burn some video codecs to that disk along with the midget porn though

It's gonna be survival like in the zombie movies. And if i'm gonna fight to live to see the future it had better not be a future without midget porn

I'm happy some people realize the level of chaos i had in mind. But there would also be a lot of materials and infrastructure left intact. I wonder if the world would be back to sort of operational in 1 or 2 decades
