The title pretty much says it all but I've always thought that the best way to give points In hockey is:
3 points for a regulation win
2 points for an overtime win
And
One point for an overtime loss
The magic point in the nhl always bugged me. It makes me very happy for a league that has done everything right so far.
I saw once in the comments on r/nhl or r/hockey that people have done the math on decades of NHL seasons using this scoring system in place of 2-0-1 and it essentially had no effect on the standings/playoff seeding. Ultimately it averages out to the same. I have no source on this because I read it on a reddit comment but if someone does have it please link
