Im pretty sure the entire OPM fanbase universally agree that season 2 sucked, and I thought so too for a time. But as I watched it a couple times over, I realized it's not actually that bad. The soundtrack was good (mainly garous theme), the fight scenes were halfway decent, and the animation was alright at best, with some occasional good moments. The reason why it had such poor reception was because it was right after one of the best seasons of an anime I've ever seen. From the sound design, to the voice acting, the soundtrack, the fight scenes and of course the animation, season 1 of OPM was utter perfection, so of course it made season 2 a major letdown. It's like eating a slice of cheese pizza after eating a beef Wellington made by Gordon Ramsey.
What do you think? What could they have fixed about season 2 to make it better? What were some parts you enjoyed about it?
I wish they had more time, and I wish they trusted themselves more to do it in their own style. You could SEE it peeking through, especially with some of the Garou fights--the bold, almost pop out look, the American comic-style transitions, the timing.... But I think they crumbled under the weight of expectations. What the FUCK are you supposed to do when you're the runner up to what people were calling the anime that saved anime, and set the new bar for what it could achieve, but your bosses refuse to give you extra time and resources to follow that up, AND you don't have the weight of an industry powerhouse to call in favors from some of the best animators available??? And that's not EVEN touching on the fact that they needed to make a transition season where the final arc hadn't been finished yet, so it was hard to tell what to focus on. That's like asking someone to make a sequel of Snow White but they need to base it off an unfinished book series and they also have to release three other movies at the same time.
They absolutely should have waited, but I don't think executives gave them a choice because they just wanted the money. They probably thought the series couldn't fail so they didn't give anyone working on it even a fraction of the time they needed. It sucks. It sucks so MUCH. And it sucks even harder because I really feel like that vibrant style and comedic timing that tried to shine through could have worked EXTREMELY WELL for OPM, but they would have needed several miracles and a pocket dimension with time to spare to pull it off.
