Saitama had the chance to take an extremely expensive diamond ring that no one would blame him for accepting because it was a thank you for him coming to the rescue--and he turned it down. He's done it with kids trying to thank him too. Word of god says he didn't touch it, and you don't get to say you know the character better than the creator...but refusing money he doesn't feel like he deserves is absolutely what Saitama would do, and it's been consistent through the entire series. You just weren't paying attention.
