Why is the word 'variables' interchangeably used instead of words like 'factors' or 'things'?

Post Body

Variables are things that changes their value or character when given different circumstances. But when one circumstance is given, the value or character remains constant. In my point of view, a variable should be something that changes its characters or values no matter the circumstances.

I came across this sentence in a book: "You will know me well enough and soon enough, depending on a diverse range of variables."

My brain can't figure out why the author has used the word in this sentence. The problem is that there is no need to call the things they are calling 'variables' as such because the fact that they are varying does not matter. This confusion with the word 'variables' was always their with me since my childhood when i used to learn maths and all. I never took effort to actually clarify this. No one has ever came up with the same problem.

Is it just me? Can anybody relate to this and answer my question?

Pleeaassee, even if you feel I don't make sense, please comment something that you feel about this matter. I don't want to be left alone with this in my head.
