Why do some parents need to be told something multiple times to understand it?
Post Body

Started to notice in the past year or so that my dad is just oblivious to EVERYTHING that’s happening. You can tell a bunch of people something and my dad needs it explained specifically to him.

A few months ago I (21M, still live at home) was telling my parents about one of my colleagues from the supermarket I work at that I liked but she didn’t like me back. Throughout that whole conversation my dad kept making weird and inappropriate comments. It was as if he wasn’t listening. He does this a lot, half the time you ask him a question about something and the response is nothing to do with what we’re talking about. Can’t tell if he’s taking in what I’m telling him or not.

The next day, I took the bus and went to a big shopping centre to buy some clothes. When I was heading home, my mum phoned me and asked me to buy bottles of fruit juice. My dad was apparently in the living room when she made that phone call. I was near to the shop I work at when she phoned, so I popped in. The bottles were in a carrier bag with the name of the shop written on it. When I got home my dad accused me of stalking that woman. No, it was because mum literally wanted me to buy juice (he apparently didn’t know that). My dad was wired to the moon. Apparently my dad misheard me say that I was ‘obsessed with her’, those words never left my mouth. A classic case of my dad needing something explained multiple times and not listening to anything.
