Why was Taiwan called “Chinese Taipei” in the 2024 Olympics Opening Ceremony?

i’m fully aware that the Olympics have never been free of geopolitical tensions, like ever. I mean, Russia and Belarus literally aren’t participating, South africa and soviet union used to be banned or sit the games out etc.

But why is China basically allowed to assert a claim to Taiwan like that? Hong Kong was also named Hong Kong, China in the ceremony.

What kind of power does China have over the Olympics where they’re allowed to make these irredentist claims at a massive global event?
