What happens if a criminal kills their defense attorney during the trial?

(I watch a few cop shows, and was morbidly curious, sorry)
Is it an automatic guilty verdict since the judge and jury witnessed the murder, or does there need to be a whole separate investigation to prove that the defendant just snapped their attorney's neck?
