When did white guys wearing a chain necklace become trendy again?

I'm genx and remember this being a thing in the 80's. In the 90's, the shell and hemp necklaces were a thing. Now, I notice tons of white dudes from teens to 30-somethings with a single gold necklace (always worn over a t-shirt).

I think they look good, just curious what prompted the trend again.
