Nikon 35mm DX 1.8 Softness Problem

So I have the older model 35mm DX Prime (1.8G, not ED) and it's been my observation that its focus seems to miss a lot or its soft. Stopping down to f/3.5 helps a bit but even if I focus directly on a subject's face it tends to look like it's still missing. Any suggestions? Try calibration to my body maybe (D500)
About to go on a trip and doing portraits/landscapes and debating whether to just rent a replacement cause its so inconsistent.
