Karma - I get it kinda

So I get that you have to have karma which prevents bots and spam account but what I don’t understand is I’ve gotten some upvotes and remain at 1 and I’m not a bot - though a bot would say they’re not a bot -_- reddits a great tool but it’s so hard to start so I wonder how they continue to get new unique users/visitors?
