Do you use it to describe a specific music genre or to refer to popular music?

I think I use it as both and a combination of both, like for example Lady Gaga, Madonna, etc. are pop pop, but I also call pop any type of popular song (in which vocals are the main focus) excludig music that is exclusively rapped, traditional folk music and heavy rock/metal. So this for example includes indie music although I have the notion that both terms are somewhat conflicting.

Not that it actually matters, I just want to hear how other people think about it because I think pop music has a very subjective meaning.

I also want to make clear that I'm no using pop as a derogatory term and I don't think about it that way.
