I have 8gb of RAM in my machine, How much should I allocate?

I have 8GB of RAM and a GTX 960 in my machine, but I'm still getting major lag spikes. I was wondering how much ram I should allocate for Minecraft, and also, if anyone could tell me if this is the correct way to do it in the JVM Arguments
-Xmx6G -XX: UseConcMarkSweepGC -XX: CMSIncrementalMode -XX:-UseAdaptiveSizePolicy -Xmn7G
(tried to allocate 6, max of 7. Is this correct?)
Thanks for any help/advice given. I'm not very good with this kind of thing.
