How do you clear up 1.8 lag?

I was super pumped to update to 1.8. Just got my chance the other day to do it. But I encountered lots more lag than usual.

In 1.7, I run a solid 20-ish fps. Goes to 15-20 on multiplayer.

On 1.8, I don't even get a solid number. It goes from 12-9-5-2 and then starts over again! I turned on the VBO setting, as that was suggested, but it only gave me 15-17 at the most, and it was still going through the fps cycle.

And way to help me out on this?

I have an old Toshiba Laptop, made in 2008, runs Windows 7. Part of the Satellite Series I believe.
