been focusing on my double kick speeds pretty intensely this year. happy with my progress overall but things get real weird when i try to hit above ~160bpm. i can hit them, up to 190, but only after a very specific warmup. i basically have to sit there very sloppily attempting something around 180 for 5-15 minutes. barely hitting, everything is off. then after a while something in my muscles just “clicks” and i’m hitting those tempos hard with no issues, and can even bring the tempo back down and up again. it’s a bit hard to explain but basically it feels like my muscles need to get locked in to that specific fast technique (more calfs, less ankles) before hitting them correctly.
i’m excited i can even do these at all, but because of the weird warmup it’s not very useful in the real world. anyone else come across this? marthyn very briefly references this exact thing in one of his videos but doesn’t explain how to get over it or what it means. not sure if i just need to practice more (been having this exact issue for 6 months now despite constant practice so i’m quite frustrated) or maybe it’s just time for a different set of pedals (i’m on the single chain pearls). thanks in advance!
