I was just away from my kit for two weeks and thought my first session back would be sloppy. Instead, it was one of the best practices of my life. I've been grinding pretty hard getting my double bass speed increased and I was getting really frustrated when I would have a good practice day followed by a horrible one. It would make no sense when I could nail a speed then not even get close to it 24 hours later. Looking back, I was definitely overdoing it and my legs really needed some time off to recover.
I see a lot of posts here and other places along the lines of "I practice double bass two hours a day every day and I'm not improving." Well, your muscles needs time to heal and grow, especially when you're focusing on speed and stamina. You might even injure yourself by doing something so demanding every day. Going forward I'm going to treat drums like the gym; arm day, leg day, rest day.
