About at the end of my rope over this and desperately seeking sane advice. There must be a way to fix the windshield wipers on my old first gen 1990 Mitsubishi Montero! We’ve brought it to three different shops at this point (one shop that even specialized in old Mitsubishis) and no one has been able to get them running. The last shop at least honed in on the root issue though I think. The metal around the port in the cowl where the pivot for the wiper arms come out is corroded. We’ve tried stacking washers and making plates around this area to secure it but it eventually comes loose, the pivot starts moving around, and then the linkage binds up. Unfortunately the cowl on the first gens is not a removable panel, it’s the same piece of metal that goes up around the windshield and onto the roof of the car. The last shops advice was to find a junk montero, cut the cowl off of it, take out our windsheild, cut out the bad cowl, and weld the replacement in but it seems like there must be a better, less invasive way. At this point we’re willing to give this thing one more shot before we push it off a cliff! So far I have two ideas that might work; bring it into some kind of hot rod/custom shop that can fabricate and ask them to recreate the area around the port in the cowl or go to a marine/farm equipment shop and have them attach some external wiper system to the outside of the car or the roof rack. If anyone out there has any insight on this it’d be much appreciated. I’ve put a lot of work into this truck and it would truly be a waste to junk the thing because of this small but integral thing. Also, I’m located in very rainy Portland, Oregon so unfortunately not having dependable wipers is not an option. https://imgur.com/a/3yYFNZ1/
