So I have a 2005 Mazda 3 and the check engine light has been on it since we got it in the spring of 2018. We had it checked out and everyone said the same thing, the engine was running too lean and we were told that it wasn't really anything that needed to get fixed right away. Well everything was going fine until the tags for the car expired back in August of 2019. Now we're just trying to get it fixed. We took it to the dealership, after taking it to another mechanic who had the car for a week and said he couldn't figure out what was going on with it, because we just wanted the damn thing fixed. They had it for a day and said it was a faulty purge valve and said it would take 4-6 weeks for them to get the part, which is where we are at now with my total at $580. They called me and said they put the part in and fixed the lean engine issue but that the car was losing power and they didn't know why. They had asked me if I had ever had any power loss issues with the car before and I said no not at all and that I was just trying to get the car to pass Smog. They ran a diagnostic on the car and said it was gonna need a new fuel pump which would cost another $1000. I knew that was some bs and said I'd pay them for the purge valve and take it somewhere else for the fuel pump. Basically what I'm looking for here is some insight on what other issues could pop related to my fuel system and if it's even possible that the fuel pump could be busted in the first place. Also if anyone has any suggestions on where I could take it to get it fixed up cheap and fast, I live in Fresno, California. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
