Streaming... Dwarf Fortress? (Why not‽)
Post Body

Sunday, May 19th - 2:00 PM PST / 4:00 PM CST / 5:00 PM EST

Stream:
Conflagrated's Chuckle Hut

Dwarf Fortress

Yep. It's that game. The one with the ASCII art and the nigh-impenetrable interface.
Why would I stream this? To remove the intimidation, of course!
DF, while the interface is atrocious, is fairly serviceable and much easier to manage once you pop open a few utilities to expedite the process. I'm hoping to relieve people of such worries so they'll at the very least give the game another solid jab.

I feel it all deserves a second go, even if the developer thinks the GUI is a waste of time.

To keep things presentable, I've sorted out a nice way of showing all the details so nobody has to look at confusing tile-sets or eye-gouging ASCII graphics, while explaining the smaller details in the sub-window.

In addition, I'm running SoundSense, which reads the gamelog and assigns sounds to specific events; Keeping the player and the viewers updated on the latest blunders that are slowly tearing your lovingly crafted fort to pieces.

Oh, and anyone that shows up get's Dwarves named after them and chooses project direction.
I give this fort 3 years to live. Max.

Just a warning: This stream is going to be pretty slow with interspersed moments of chaos throughout. So I cannot guarantee good pacing.

For those who are more familar with the game, or at the very least have read Boatmurdered, here is what has happened with my 'pre-stream' fort thus far:

Spring, 201

  • Embarked in a thick forest near the entrance to a canyon; Hoping the natural choke-point would bring caravans to us.
  • Wasteland across the river to the north blows blinding clouds of dust towards our lumberjacks; Usually accompanied by giant birds of all colors of the rainbow.
  • Basic fort layout and farms complete. Our fisher-dwarf 'Flysymphony' has supplied us with more fish than we know what to do with. Food is not going to be an issue for the foreseeable future.

Summer, 201

  • Workshops completed.
  • War dogs posted by the entrance until we can get enough metals to produce weapons and traps.
  • Dug down deep to find some iron; Thus far we've only found two caverns, gold, and truck-loads of gabbro.

Autumn , 201

  • A giant falcon swooped in from the wastelands and decide to harass our residents. It had already entered our fortress and killed one of our guard dogs before we noticed it was inside; The dog managed to mangle one of the damn thing's talons, but that only served to piss it off.

Panic spread out as the bird entered the workshop level; Scattering dwarves across the halls and into the mineshafts.
The only citizen that had any combat experience was our Hunter/Fisherdwarf, 'Flysymphony'. Unfortunately, he neglected to bring ammo for his crossbow and opted to try to beat the falcon to death with it. We soon learned that not only was this fucking bird massive; It also had a goddamn axe and quickly tore Fly a new one, retiring him to his room for medical care.

A militia was quickly formed to deal with the threat and hopefully calm down the fort. Unarmed and inexperienced, the rag-tag group of 'soldiers' set upon the Falcon; Tearing the axe from its grip and chasing it into the mines, arms swinging. Our best miner, "The Shooter", was quickly dispatched by the Falcon for simply being in its chosen hiding spot. The militia quickly followed suit and proceeded to beat the Falcon unconscious. Then beat it some more. Our carpenter, "ClonedPickle", even opted to bite off the Falcon's talons. Because having the damn thing knocked out wasn't enough, I suppose.

At some point during the chaos, a giant cave spider crawled out one of the caverns from earlier. Despite being one of the most deadly inhabitants of said caverns, it showed up and, with the dwarves newfound experience in 'wrestling', was quickly made into a fine paste. Its corpse and reports of combat were not discovered until after the group had finally pulverized the Falcon into dust.

Injuries from our survivors weren't terribly severe. Worse of it was some major bleeding; But nothing our CMO couldn't match up.

  • Caverns sealed off. 'Safer' mining route taken in the hunt for weapon-grade metals.

  • Iron found... next to magma sea. Extracting it is going to be quite the trick.

Winter, 201

  • Stream start.
