It's crowded at another BestInBounds rally in Bath, this time at Innox Park. It's a large crowd, but the throngs part as BestInBounds makes his way through the middle, high fiving and shaking hands. Labour banners are raised high with red labour flags being waved in the crowd as well. BestInBounds steps to the stage and the boisterous crowd erupt in applause before falling silent.
Talofa lava and thank you all for joining me again! The trail leads me here to Bath, and I am delighted to be here, and to receive such a warm welcome from you all! Today I cover Labour’s justice policy, in essence, what it means for you all practically, and the tangible effects it will have on your lives. In words easy to understand, not hidden beneath unintelligible, hard to understand technical jargon which nobody can understand and present a very real barrier to communicating policy to the people who need to understand it the most, all of you!
A generally agreed principle amongst everyone in Britain, regardless of political affiliation is the need for a more equal, and efficient justice system. By that I mean, one which is fair, affordable and above all else, easy to access for everybody. Regardless of how much income they make, because price should not be a limit on Justice, and we must make our system work for all, equally! But meaningful change doesn’t just happen overnight and real progress is made when we keep on chipping away at the target until we reach our goal, and keep working and pushing for a better future, and labour has a plan to reach these aims. We’ll abolish tribunal fees and increase legal aid. Two important steps towards equality, we’ll remove the costs that present an unnecessary barrier to entry and promote both the development of law practitioners, and provide affordable rates for the hiring of lawyers so that cases can be argued on merit not on whether or not the parties in question can afford it. We’ll work towards providing meaningful rehab for our prisoners convicted of minor offences with a comprehensive education based programme which makes these prisoners not only employable, but also eases their transition back into society. We don’t want, and I don’t want our prison system to focus solely on imprisonment, and these proposals will shift the focus of our system from punitive to rehabilitative. Which to me is the sign of a prison system that works for the betterment of all.
We’ll also work in the classroom, so that our children are educated sufficiently on social justice issues, with civic and social justice classes implemented in the curriculum so that our children can receive well rounded educations on the issues that matter, and will be of increasing importance to them. We’ll legalise sex work, and create buffer zones around aboriton clinics so that women can undergo safe and secure abortions without fear of reprisal or harm coming to them. Moreover we can make sex work safer, and protect workers with legislation that keeps them safe and the industry accountable instead of being shrouded in mystery and the workers having no legal protection under the law. We must evolve and our approaches have to change, and this archaic way of thinking has to be phased out. If we want a modern Britain, our justice system has to mirror that desire.
On another thread, Policing is a contentious issue. Especially now more than ever when the global dialogue has reached new heights, and discourse on the matter is matched with equal passion. Labour believes in reform, and an overhaul to the policing system in a way which better enables community policing and promotes a better relationship between communities and the officers which serve them. Over the next five years, we’ll hire 20,000 new officers into the police force, and increase police wages by 18% to reverse the real term wage cut. We want to promote not disincentivize serving our communities, and I want the best possible people for this job, which is so important to our local institutions and communities. Our police play such an important core role in the functioning of our society, that we need them to be the best of the best.
Well launch a review of tasers and how they are used. More specifically their role in an increasing number of deaths due to use by police officers in restraining suspects. It’s the view of labour that this review will lead to the removal of tasers, in favour of other approaches which do not lead to as many deaths and are just as efficient in their objectives. We’ll implement legislation which abolishes stop and search checks along with an exploration into the patterns of community policing along with the aim of eradicating the knife crime plaguing Britain at the moment with a new Knife crime reduction strategy and ensure its swift implementation. Boosting funding where necessary and boosting police presence in combination with community education schemes will raise awareness, and educate our next generations sufficiently of the dangers of knife crime, and the lives that are lost in the process. We are losing too many of our youth to this scourge and the buck, the trend will stop with us, and with the Labour party as we tackle this important issue head on. We’ll take substantial action addressing racism, with a view to implement the recommendations of the Lammy review and the Stephen Lawrence enquiry.
We’ll bring our Law framework for the internet up to date with the ever changing online landscape. We’ll protect the individual privacy of our citizens online with a new digital bill of rights so that big companies cannot abuse ordinary citizens and their right to privacy. Our security services are a key player in the protection of Britons from threats overseas and abroad, and in the next budget, we will ensure their funding reflects that with a boost to the funds available to them. However we will also address the current concerns surrounding the security services - the lack of accountability and transparency moreso - so we’ll create an oversight office to monitor the security services and ensure that the security services fufill their function and are held accountable every step of the way.
Now that isn’t even our entire Justice Policy, but I just wanted to cover the bases because there's so much more I haven't really touched. Overhauling our immigration system, brexit and trade, brexit and its effects on us, and what it means for all of you and the future of our security. But I’ve already taken enough of your time, what I want to leave you all with is this. Labour has the policy, the tools and the desire to make our Justice system fairer and more equal for all, and for our legal frameworks and infrastructure to move up to date with the modern era. So that we can enter a New Era with a new system, one that doesn’t disadvantage those on lower incomes or that has systems that are archaic and well past their used-by date.
And we can do it with your support, thank you Bath you've absolutely love it.
Malo Lava,
And stay safe all!
