Estoban06 arrives in Shrewsbury at 6.40, just in time for the beginning of a town hall session at the Community Centre. A large crowd is already gathered in the main hall, with more expected to arrive in the coming minutes
Estoban06 makes his way on stage to a loud round of appause from the audience
Constituent A asks: “What have the Liberal Democrats done for me and my locality over the last term?
“For the majority of the last term, we served in government with the Classical Liberals. With them, we passed many pieces of important legislation which has effects right down at constituency levels such as the General Planning Reform Bill and the Law Reform (Murder and Non-Fatals) Act. These acts have a direct effect on areas such as Shrewsbury and an undeniably good effect at that.”
Constituent B asks: “in your campaign, you committed to an eventual increase in foreign aid to 1% of GDP. Does this mean that I will be less well of as a result?”
“That's a very good question. The answer is no. As a relatively rich Western country, it is well within our means to complete this budget increase. It is to our advantage, both on a financial and moral ground. On a moral ground, it is important to help provide for people and countries who are less well off than ourselves. On a financial ground, in the long term, creating a strong trading partner will see both countries prosper even more. Think of foreign aid as a short term investment for a long term gain.”
Estoban06 spent the rest of the night answering questions from other constituents before signing off at 10:30 and heading to Cardiff.
