Earlier this week, the Deputy Prime Minister and my party leader called me into his office to invite me to become Home Secretary, which I accepted. After a four year break from frontline politics, it feels good to be serving this great country once again.
I am honoured to be here, speaking outside the Home Office following my appointment to this position, replacing the right honourable /u/model-willem who did a splendid job as Home Secretary, and who I was sad to see depart from the government.
I intend to be in this position as Home Secretary for the short remainder of this Parliament.
In the next couple of weeks, my overall goal as Home Secretary is to promote Britain as a welcoming nation, a nation that encourages hard working people from all over the world to come and live in the United Kingdom. I will keep Britain a safe place, safe from both internal and external threats. I will also do what I can so that our police have all the resources they need to keep us all safe.
To everyone in our strong union of nations, thank you.
