So when we got together last time with my inlaws (MIL, SIL and her husband) it was for my birthday, which was fun and fine and held at MIL's house. There's not much to do since MIL was going to sell the house and thus got rid of a bunch of furniture, but then she divorced the plastic surgeon and is keeping the house. So when we all get together, there is not nearly enough seating for everyone (this is relevant). It's doable for a couple hours, but not ideal. Additionally, the house is right on a river, a very deep, cold river and eldest daughter cannot swim. So being outside means constant supervision.
So at this party, I offered to host Thanksgiving this year. I thought it would be nice to change up the venue and who hosts since we've always gone to MIL's and there isn't preestablished tradition to worry about upholding. Plus, if we host, then oldest kiddo has all her toys and youngest kiddo (7 months at Thanksgiving) will have all HER toys and comfy place to nap. MIL, at the party, agreed.
I got all excited, because I've never hosted Thanksgiving before and we finally have space and time and I have that awesome Turkey recipe that was shared! And we wouldn't have to drive an hour each way with cranky kids.
Well, today I get a call from my husband. MIL actually wants to host Thanksgiving. And is apparently making it a big deal, in her own way. He says he'll convince her to stick with the original plan if I really want, but I'm not sure that I want this to be my hill, so to speak.
And in her classic way, she's now interpreted my offer to host (and rotate hosts each year) as an insult to her cooking. Husband is also wishing he had recorded the conversation, just for review after the fact with his sister (who totally gets it).
