Nanotechnology effecting the biosphere

Post Body

Isaac Arthur made a poll for episode topics. One of them covered nanotechnology. It reminded me of an old show I used to love: Generator Rex. The plot is a lab experimenting with nanites accidentally releases them and every eukaryote on Earth now has them. It causes some organisms to mutate and government agencies have to form to fight them. Sudden mutations like that are unlikely but is it possible for nanites to infect the biosphere like that?

Comments

Happened with midochondria and the organelles that allow photosynthesis.

It's called endosymbiosis

So yes this is not just plausible but has been seen before.
