I just retired from 22 years in the Navy. I have my head spinning with all the Vet Assist companies and programs and networking, to get help on the outside, it's all too much really. You get shotgun blasted with help and it's way too much.
I digress - I have no recent IT experience, wasted my time in the Navy not getting certified in anything, except for Net in 2014. I got hired by my company for a Electronics Technician II, then they surprised me by stating, that they needed me as a Sys Admin. I've never been one. I'm not exactly foreign to networking, security, or even computers in the least. I passed my Net in 2014. I feel like they're going to can me because I can't actually function as a Sys Admin even though that's not what I was hired as. I'm using Jason Dion's Udemy course to learn Sec , but do not have the mental capacity to use others at the same time. I also, don't know what happens after I pass the exam. Let's hope I do. What programs/virtual system environments, labs, training can I use to keep my knowledge from wasting away and be useful? Every time I take a college course for Cloud, CCNA, etc. just goes the way of the dodo with lack of utilization. I have severe ADD and am a smidge lazy, :P.
Example: I was asked immediately one day just to see if I can help. One tech was having issues getting Bosch cameras to talk to the ACS via the router it was connected to. I didn't even know what "ACS" was. I do now, but still have little knowledge. There were problems setting up the cameras encryption with the ACS. I just felt so small and useless. The tech had little concern that I was there, except the few times I piped up asking if something was tried. Which he said "Yes" and was again quickly forgotten about. My friend in the State Department said, IT is all about" trial by fire". So, that made it even worse. I really don't want to get canned.
Edit: removed information about my CV and personal life as they were irrelevant.
