Hey everyone, a bit of background on myself: 58 yo caregiver to my wife (mid 30's) with cerebral palsy. Over the past 10 years I have prioritized her health and care over my own (no specific reason) and really neglected my own eating, self-care, etc... A good example would be pretty much everyday with a few occasional exceptions, make sure she gets 3 good healthy meals a day, snacks when she wants them, etc. I'll usually start MY day with only a cup of coffee and not eat until the late hours of the day, often after I have put her to bed and almost always totally gorging myself with one big meal of lousy food of sorts (like a Jethro bowl of mac and cheese with a ton of hamburger meat in it, LOL.)
Fast forward to about 3 months ago when I wound up in the ER for something that turned out to be non-emergent. I will tell you that opened my eyes to the fact that I need to start taking care of myself better if I am able to continue caring for my wife in the long-term.
I made a commitment to start eating much healthier (which I have), exercise when I can (it's hard when you're caring for someone who can't be left alone for a long period of time), and finally getting health insurance (which I haven't been able to afford for nearly 14 years).
Insurance kicked in on New Years and already had my first physical, a ton of bloodwork done and all my shots updated (COVID, shingles, pneumonia, flu). All my bloodwork came out remarkably well. Need to work on raising my HDL, my LDL is right on the border of normal. My weight is below 250 for the first time in a decade (loss of about 15 pound total so far).
So the question I have is this: I have days where I am feeling quite good and I am active, I also have days where my body feels a little off and rundown a bit. According to all my labs, I am fairly healthy with no major issues. Could this all just be my body reacting to finally eating right and as my health gets better these "feelings" go away? I guess I can liken it to detoxing when you've been doing drugs for quite a while I suppose.
Sorry for the long intro! Happy New Year!
