Hello guitarists,
I'm kind of facing a crossroads in my life and career and seeking out advice from guitar instructors in particular. I graduated with a guitar performance degree back in 2014 and year later I started teaching students at a nearby local theater that had space for lessons. I've maintained a handful of students ever since that has varied from about 3-4 to almost 10. It's definitely been my favorite job and certainly provided some good side income. After almost a decade, I'm considering making the jump to do this full-time.
I do have the benefit that I won't be leaving a full-time job to do this because I don't have one lol. I work part time in a non-music related position at a community college and basically have pieced together my living doing that, guitar lessons, and performing. At the end of the day thought I'm usually only making $10-12k a year from that part time job. I'm at the point where I'm either just going to try to find a regular full time job, or at least try to be a full-time instructor.
My main set of questions for those who have taught full time really deal with logistics....how many students do you have per week and what was your threshold to make it viable to do it full-time? What do you charge per lesson? Do you work independently, for a music store, or both? I'm essentially an independent contractor with the theater, but I feel like it would be difficult for me to get enough students there and I'm considering applying to Music & Arts and other stores in nearby cities to teach. I look forward to hearing your responses and thank you!
