Gin Distillers -- Any advice?

I received this kit and would like to play with it next weekend.
Have any of you used this kit before? It seems fairly simple -- I'm thinking about getting some pretty cheap vodka though. (Crystal Palace/Seagrims level.)
I'm assuming if I used higher quality vodka would it taste better in the end?
