Denizens of /r/futurology --
AltSciFi prototypes have existed in various forms for a couple of years. Our primary purpose is to inspire people to care about technology, science and society -- which are core values in science fiction.
Futurism that looks farther ahead than a few years is essentially fiction as well, considering the accelerating pace of technological/social change.
The new zine will focus on:
- future-focused science and technology as inspiration for creating your own plausible future worlds;
- independent artists and writers creating science fiction now;
- an opportunity to escape from mega-corporations like Google, Amazon and Apple;
- an approach that works more like a community resource than a profit-driven commodity;
- a choice to fight for your privacy by paying artists directly for their work instead of giving away personal data in exchange for "free".
.
Our secondary purpose is to create a cool zine that people will enjoy enough to gladly pay for, so that indie artists can create new works without being slaves to the corporate world.
Privacy is only dead if we decide to give it away. AltSciFi is an alternative that sees people as humans -- creators whose work is valuable, and readers/viewers whose privacy matters.
We plan to donate 10% of profits to the Electronic Frontier Foundation as well.
Each issue will be a separate Kickstarter project. Once it's funded, the zine will be sent to our paying members.
More details will arrive soon. For now, you can take a look at concept images posted yesterday.
If you're a technologist, writer or artist and want to contribute in some way, leave your questions and thoughts in the comments. Thanks.
