Mariano Rivera is widely regarded to be the greatest closer of all time. He announced his retirement at the beginning of this season, and tonight was his final home game ever - after 19 years of playing for the New York Yankees.
Context/description of the video if you can't watch:
Two of his teammates that also joined the Yankees around the same time, Andy Pettitte and Derek Jeter, came out of the dugout to take Mariano out of the game, allowing him to leave the field to the ovation from the crowd that he so rightly deserved. Despite being one of the more unflappable people in the game, Mariano broke down and cried into Andy Pettitte's shoulder, hugging him and Jeter before taking his final walk off the mound.
The Yankees manager, Joe Girardi, met Mariano at the top of the dugout steps and he walked down to hug and greet his teammates there while the crowd cheered and chanted his name in the background. After making his way down the line of teammates, he took to the field one more time as a curtain call, acknowledging the sold out crowd.
After the game had ended (the Yankees lost), Mariano sat on the dugout bench alone and waited for the field to clear, taking in the emotion for one final time. He walked up the dugout steps and back to the mound, standing where he did so many times before and pawing at the dirt before going down on one knee and taking a scoop of dirt to bring home with him.
