DeSantis has absolutely no credibility at this point. Anything that leaves his mouth I assume will be propagandized falsehood.
I think he does practice fidelity to tea party/freedom caucus ideals and while he certainly does performatively stir up his base he also very much intends to hurt via policy those outside his base. I believe he consider himself at war with anyone outside the base and his actions support that. He registers nothing that approaches concern for Floridians, only for that demonstrable white Christo fascist minority that he came from.

His moral conviction - brazenly and absent of shame saying or doing anything in lockstep service to Tea Party mentality - makes him a folk hero to authoritarian minds. He doesn't represent Floridians. He's trying to force Florida to represent his personal values and that simple virtue of force is appealing to our resident authoritarians.
