New to this sub with a question about squats.
Post Body

I've been weightlifting for over 3 years now and running for over 5. I'm by no means bulky, but have a decent athletic build. Think Spiderman vs Wolverine. Anyway, I've been stuck doing squats on a Smith Machine due to the gym I go to lacking a free weight option. I also do a lot of body weight exercises in conjunction with weights as I used to be in gymnastics and feel that it gives me more practical, real world strength, but finding effective load bearing exercise for the legs using only your body is difficult. I've been progressing but lately been noticing that I'm doing so at the expense of my range. The heavier I go, the less I can go down. It's not a half squat, but I'd say it's just before going parallel with my thighs. With strength as my main goal, not size, should I be more concerned about lightening my load and increasing my range of motion, or pack on the weight and shorten the range?
