I watched The Descent for the first time the other day and LOOOVED it. I'm normally not a horror movie fan, but this one had me hooked!
I am a bisexual, polyamorous woman and here is my interpretation. Curious to hear others' thoughts on this great film.
The Descent is a movie about queer childbirth envy. In the first scene, the women are rafting. It's challenging, chaotic, fun, and wet! The husband watches but otherwise isn't involved. Juno is in love with Sarah and at the same time envies her & her husband because they have conceived & have brought something new (Jessica) into the world together.
Exploring a new cave is Juno's idea. Why did she keep it a secret from the others? Because she's hiding a secret desire to create a lasting legacy with Sarah and to name the cave together, once they have endured the challenges, pushing and coaching each other through the excruciating pain and finally emerging out of the cave-womb.
But she won't get what she wants, because she hasn't been honest and the women don't trust her. She raped them, in a metaphorical way, because she couldn't admit to herself what she really wanted all along, and took it by deception.
