Strategy

There are a few different strategies you can use--party setup-wise--for this trial, and they revolve around how you want to go about tanking the damage.

  • Setup 1: Provoke/Draw Attacks magic tank Physical cover tank (100% dodge or bulky)
  • Setup 2: Cover magic tank Provoke/Draw Attacks physical tank (100% dodge or bulky)

They both can get the job done but it's largely up to which units, what gear you have, and your own preferences. Either way, the goal is to have you tanks soak up as much damage as possible since the rest of you units will be taking an absolute beating from unavoidable damage. The main culprit of this unavoidable damage being ใ‚ˆใ ใ‚Œ, a DoT that deals damage each turn to your party members. This ability is cast every few turns and the only way to get rid of it is to die and be resurrected. To make matters worse, the only real way to mitigate it's damage is via high spirit, MAG break on the boss, and general mitigate buffs. While this DoT is nasty, what makes it even worse (and what will be the cause of most of your frustration) is that it is cast as a preemptive attack by Malboro Great. Yup, that means you take the full brunt of the damage without the luxury of being able to at least break the boss first.

What does all the above mean? It means that much of your strategy is figuring out how to live through and deal with ใ‚ˆใ ใ‚Œ. And unfortunately, there is no great answer. Personally, I just kept reviving my dead units each time and powered through it. Having Guts on a unit certainly helps a lot too.

Once your surviving (or just powering through) ใ‚ˆใ ใ‚Œ the rest of the fight is pretty basic. Keep cover up on which ever tank you have doing cover and maintain ATK/MAG breaks on the boss as well as physical, magic, and general mitigation buffs on your party (if using a dodge tank, physical mitigation isn't necessary). You may also want to keep up a Stop protection buff on everyone, but it's not entirely necessary during the first encounter. The reason for this is that the ability that applies it, ๆ•้ฃŸใ‚ญใƒผใƒ—, also marks the target for instant death on the following turn and applies Reflect to them (careful not to cast Reraise on that unit!); however, if you use an ability such as Fingersnap to dispel that unit it won't be targeted for Death. In the process, you also just end up clearing Stop as well. Finally, the boss will also use Berserk on a target but if you are using Draw Attacks this isn't really an issue. Against the Queen, you will want Stop protection.

Speaking of the Queen, her fight is significantly easier (in my opinion) but can spiral out of control much faster. You no longer have to worry about ใ‚ˆใ ใ‚Œ but now she has 3 mini Malboros with her. Between the Queen and the Malboros you can expect to have Stop and Charm cast on your party members fairly quickly into the fight so try to have protection against them up. Aside from the swap from Berserk to Charm and the addition of some adds, the fight doesn't really change all that much and what you need to do doesn't either.

The Death will be cast upon unit with Reflect buff and can be nullified by Safety Bit/Genji Shield. The Reflect check is done from slot 1 to slot 6. Thanks to this mechanics, the Death can be re-directed to units in slot 1 and 2 by casting Reflect on them, thus protecting the units in slot 3-6.

It's best to nuke the Malboro King from above 30%. Below that, the Malboro will start to use 2 x AoE physical attack.

For the Malboro Queen, it from 40%. Below that, the Queen will start using the Fixed attack every 2 turns and 2 x AoE physical attack. The Death is also doubled. Malboro Queen has lower DEF.

On turn 2 and 3, the Small Malboros will use a very strong magic attack. Charlotte's CD skill is very useful to mitigate the damage.

Bonus Strategy

There is one more strategy that allows you to cheese the fight if you have very specific units/equipment. The main two units required are Sedona and Vesuvia. For their equipment, you want MP restoring items/materia, Summer Citra/Folka's TM, and two of Rikku's Pouch. The rest of your party, including Sedona and Vesuvia, must be vulnerable to Petrify. The only other requirement is to give Vesuvia Phoenix.

Once the above is setup, you go into battle and have Sedona and Vesuvia use their Hide abilities. Everyone else will die and you just keep hitting repeat until your Esper gauge is filled. Once filled, come back on an odd turn (5, 7, 9, etc.) and have Vesuvia use Phoenix while Sedona continues to hide. On the boss' turn it will cast Bad Breath as its first action and petrify everyone. Have Sedona hide until the next odd turn and then have her cast Cure All with Rikku's Pouch. Have Vesuvia hide this time and have the rest of your units deal damage to the boss. Just repeat this switching between Sedona and Vesuvia hiding and using Cure All until the boss dies. And yes, this works on the Queen too.
