Weaning a rescue in odd circumstances
Post Body

I have a donkey Jenny and her yearling jenny foal that I got for free from a less than ideal circumstance. I got them at the end of June as companions for my mare and everyone has settled in nicely.

However, I've noticed that the foal (Arwen) still tries to nurse from Mom (Saffron). I'm relatively sure that Arwen was never weaned as she was born at the farm where I got them both. They are incredibly attached to one another. Saffron is no longer lactating and doesn't really tolerate Arwen nursing, but Arwen is over a year old. She was born in April of last year.

Is weaning even possible at this point? Aside from separation, what else should I be doing?
