Ever done a large project or tapestry?

Hi all, I'm fairly new to embroidery but I've already set my sights high!
I want to make either a blanket or wall hanging, hand embroidered with an image and quote from Doctor Who. What fabric might work best? And how would be the best way to go about making something that large?
I'm not sure what the limitations are, but I'd love to give it a shot.
