Question about direct drive and cloud wheel noise

Post Body

Among others I have a bound motor D3 which I love however a few weeks ago I started getting the dreaded ā€œrattling soundā€ from one of the rear motors.

It does not appear to make the noise while Iā€™m free spinning the motors on my work bench and with the wheels off I cannot replicate the noise at all which leads me to believe itā€™s not the bearings (could be wrong of course). It only happens when Iā€™m riding. I took the wheel and motor off today to inspect and clean everything and noticed there is a tiny bit of play when I put the wheel back on. It looks like the 10 pins on the wheel adapter are very slightly worn down resulting in a very minor movement back and forth.

My question is this: is it more likely that the adapter pins are worn or the cores on the wheels?..or both. I figured new kegal core wheel adapters are the cheapest place to start as far as replacements. My clouds wheels are definitely a little worn (rubber) but I feel like they still have some miles on them.

Also, I donā€™t believe itā€™s the shaft as some others have reported as there is absolutely no play when I put the motor back on. Infact I have to hit it with a rubber mallets to get on/off as itā€™s pretty damn tight.

Any suggestions and/or comments would be greatly appreciated!
