How many of you are *always* counting? Do you have some sort of internal alternative methods of counting?
Post Body

I'm a multi-instrumentalist, and drums are not my strongest, but there was a while I was playing a lot and feeling decently comfortable with my chops. I noticed that when I had a good habit of always counting, my timing and feel were much better, allowing me a lot more freedom and confidence with my grooves and fills and whatnot.

I also practice a lot with a very very slow metronome, like ~10 bpm (so click is only on the one, and sometimes only on the one every other bar) to really reinforce time keeping, but I'm only successful when I'm actively and constantly counting all subdivisions. This is something I've extended to do with all instruments, except singing.

I'm curious what others thoughts & methods are, I have heard some (non-drummers) say actively counting is a crutch, and I'm not so sure.

I'm about 18 months in and unless I'm just dicking about I'm counting
