Some background, we just rescued a 2 year old BC mix about three months ago. We knew he would be high-energy and we live a very active lifestyle. What we weren't prepared for was his severe anxiety and borderline neuroticism.
I'm writing this after just taking him to the vet where he sat and barked in my face for 45 minutes straight. I know the tricks. I know you ignore him and reward when he's being quiet. It doesn't matter with him. The second he's quiet and gets a treat he'll bark again.
I dread obedience class every week because he's so disruptive that our teacher yelled at me to quiet him down. I was trying my best to ignore him and reward for "good quiet."
Then there's the separation and general anxiety. He follows us everywhere and makes it nearly impossible for us to have sex which has caused a strain on the relationship. Once we leave, he gets into extreme destructive chewing. For the first week or two he did alright outside of the crate and then he chewed up headphones and our couch. Now we crate him but it only adds to his neuroticism and hyperness when we ARE home.
We are feeling hopeless and stuck. We run him 3 miles every morning. Walk him in the afternoon. Walk him at night. And train with him for 30-60 minutes a day. All of our conversations and energy revolve around him. We've heard it takes a month or two to get used to the transition and frankly, it feels harder than ever. Our dog is so hyper and aggravating it regularly brings my fiancé to tears and me to exhaustion.
Please help with any tips or stories. We are contemplating giving him up for adoption again at the end of the summer because it's just so, so exhausting...
Edit: I want to thank everyone for their thoughtful responses. We are most likely going to take him to a behaviorist to get some sort of plan.
To give a bit more context around his anxiety, he actually loves playing with people and dogs SO much that he goes crazy if he sees another animal and can't play with it. Or if we sit on the couch and aren't giving him 100% attention. This makes it hard for me to tell whether or not to take him to the dog park to release energy or keep him from it to not rile him up.
Additionally, he seems to get this (this will sound stupid) crazy look in his eyes when he enters his agitated state. Like they get super honed in and wide and we know he's about to start barking for a long time. We wonder if it's schizophrenia?
