rescued a high anxiety dog
Post Body

hey ! it's my first time on this sub and im here in need of some advice

a few months ago a rescued my sweet baby Nova, she's most definitely a mutt but her adoption papers say she has part beagle and part boxer, ill inset a picture of her if I can. i wasn't entirely ready for a dog when I adopted her, she's my first puppy I've had on my own! she's about 6 years old and i love her with all of my heart.

we instantly formed a strong bond and I'd do anything for her. when I adopted her one of my coworkers was going through a divorce with her abusive husband. i had first hand witnessed him abuse my coworker, their dogs, and their kids. needless to say it made me so angry, i told my coworker id do anything to help her. and I did, she stayed with me for a few nights, I helped her pack her things... and i took nova. she said she didn't want to leave her with the abusive husband, but the place she was moving into would only allow one dog and she wanted to keep the smaller puppy that she had. i was excited to take nova home, she was so sweet and i had already fallen in love with this dog. one a hot summer day , my coworker brought her to my house and brought her adoption papers. chaos ensued.

I had seen nova a few days prior to her being dropped off at my house, during this visit I confirmed that she didn't have fleas (my biggest worry about bringing a dog into my home that already had 2 cats). and when she got to me, she was horribly infested with fleas !! i brought it up to my coworker and she said that she had left nova alone with the abuser for a night or two, and her little puppy didn't have fleas. I was annoyed by this, but I went to the pet store and got as much anti flea stuff as I could ! as well as a dog bed, a bowl, a new collar, a brush, and some treats.

once I got her de-fleaed I brought her inside and promptly realized she was a nervous urinator. she had never done this around me before, and she had never acted so skittish. i figured such a big change must've been hard for her and I tried to make it easier on as best I could. i tried to use treats to train her out of the nervous peeing and we were making some progress but then once night while I was away at work, my father accidentally let her out of the house and she ran off. my dad and partner ran around looking for her and they found her pinned under a car, someone had ran her over. the driver (who according to my partner was drunk) got out and started freaking out, worried he killed her. luckily she was alive, she bolted to the woods and eventually ran back inside where we found her in the bathtub, shaking, whimpering, and just freaking out. she was aggressive towards my partner but when I got home she let me touch her and comfort her. she went to the vet and they said she had no serious injuries other than needing stitches on her face and some slight burns on her under carriage. ever since then nothing I do to try to train her out of the nervous peeing has worked. and I've noticed that she is extremely high anxiety in public now, constantly vocalizing and pulling at her leash.

she's become so much more anxious since this happened and it's to the point where I've stopped letting her get in my bed because she just empties her bladder on it everytime I do.

if anyone has any advice I'd love to hear it, I want her to be happy and I want our existence together to be a little easier for both of us ❤️
