Long story short, I have an idea for a short campaign. It’s my first time dming. The basic premise is: the players work for a company that provides protection for trade caravans and investigates missing ones. They would search for the missing group and eventually fall into a plot to revive a group of old gods who disappeared from the world long ago. My ultimate goal is this: create memorable moments and boss fights. I’m thinking about using Matt collville’s action oriented monsters rules for the bosses and some encounter monsters.I’ve drawn inspiration for some of the monsters from different media that you may or may not recognize. The first is a plant monster. It can’t move or physically do anything, but it can control people’s minds into protecting it and attacking for it. It has taken over a nearby village. I was thinking it could release a cloud of the mind control particles and get some PCs to join its side when it gets hit the first time. Some it’s actions would be to summon the villagers to fight though most of them are regular villagers. Some are guards. The other boss idea is some kind of monster or demon. It disguises itself as an old man who plays a flute. The music it plays is it’s attacks in addition it’s physical ones. I was thinking if it is in its lair the music would physically alter the room. Like cause it to rotate, rearrange furniture, etc. the flute is the source of it power. Destroy it and it can’t do anything. I have some more ideas but you get the idea. I guess some of questions include how can I make some of these moments? How do I keep from railroading the players and make the game fun?
