My party is hiding from the thieves guild and Im not sure how to DO that from a DM POV

My party has just skipped town after cheating the local thieves guild. I want the guild to go after them. How do I, as the DM, do this in terms of mechanics? Do i just sort of make it up as i go along, do I roll investigation against their stealth at different points? Is there some other way to do this? Help
