So I have been playing in this new group only for a couple sessions now and it has been great, but today was not a good day for anyone. First off let me say that I really like my DM he has created a world that is fun and where everyone feels apart of the story. I also really like the rest of the party while some of the people at the table are still pretty new they are fun to play with. However today I came seriously close to flipping the entire table and walking out.
So our group had recently gotten the deed for a small keep just outside the city next to a small village. It had been abandoned for quite sometime now and Brutus the dwarf who gave us the deed had been gone for years on an adventure without even setting foot on the property. So he gave our group the deed so that we could set down roots near the city. So our group decides to go investigate the keep. As we get to the keep we barely make it into the courtyard when we are attacked by kobolds that had taken control of the abandoned keep. We quickly take care of the kobolds but are surprised when we find a young blue dragon has been hiding in the well. We are barely able to take the dragon out, but not before teo of our party members nearly die. So we decide to go back to t hff e village to make camp and heal them come back and investigate the rest of the keep later. As we wake up make our way back to the keep recharged and ready to clear the rest of the keep of any other danger that may lurk below. When we get back, my character decides to check the well to see if I could see the dragon. We knew it was down there because when it fell we could hear the sound of it hitting water, but the hole was so deep that no one could see all the way down. So we decided to wait till after we cleared out the rest of the keep to get the dragons body out of the well. We make our way inside where we find a lot of old dwarvish bodies. It seemed as though there had been some kind of battle here, but it had happened so long ago that whenever we tried to touch a skeleton it would immediately crumble to dust. So we continued on and found a set of stairs that led down to the cellar. Down there we had found more Dwarvish bodies, however these bodies were very different than the ones upstairs. Upstairs the bodies had obviously been in a fight the bodies down here were more careful the dm described as many of the bodies looked as the were curled up together. In one of the corners we found a crate of poison, we figured that the dwarves were apart of some kind of cult and they had killed themselves we were about to take the poison when we were suddenly attacked by a group of rust monsters. We were easily able to kill, but not before the paladin had lost both his armor and sword. We cautiously enter the next room and this is where everything goes wrong. We enter the room to find an alter and a giant pit with a quick religion check we are able to confirm are suspicions from the previous room this was definitely some cult shit and this hole basically lead to the underdark. Other than the alter and the pit the room is completely bare. We are about to leave when me and one other player decide to do a final sweep. We notice a small crack in the wall that looks like it leads to a hidden room. The rogue pulls out her crowbar and pulls out some of the wall and from behind the wall comes a small canister full of gas. Roll Con Saves. Me and the barbarian are the only ones to pass the saves. I think that is it but one player points out that the paladin is right next to the pit when he fails his save. The DM tells us there is a 10 percent chance of him falling into the pit and rolls his percentile die. 65. The gas is filling the room so I decide the best course of action is to pick up the canister and throw it into the pit, bad move. The moment I pick up the canister and begin to chuck it the DM asks me to roll another con save. I roll an 8. Uh oh. The DM says there is only a 10 percent chance that I fall in the pit, he rolls. 4. Everyone at the table is stunned as my character's unconscious body tumbles over the alter straight down pit. The barbarian ask to roll to catch my body before it falls. The dm tells him to roll a dex save he rolls a 3. Awkward laughter escapes my mouth as my character, that I had slowly began to grow so attached to over the pass 6 sessions free falls thousands of feet to his death. To make things worse the gas had only been sleeping gas only meant to knock us unconscious for a minute before we all came to. There was uneasiness in the air as all the characters woke up to find that I had careened into the pit. Inside the wall the group found weird iconography that further proved our cult theory and some gold. I honestly wasn't paying much attention I was still honestly in shock. After a few moments of the characters trying to figure out what just happened we decided to take a short break. The DM called me to the side he was as obviously shaken as I was and offered to bring my character back. He told me that a powerful witch that we had befriended earlier in the campaign was watching over us to satiate her own boredom and was willing and able to bring me back despite my lack of body, however my character would be forever changed from the experience. I declined I had really liked the character I built and didn't want to change him so drastically. The last time the witch brought someone back they changed from a halfling to an elf. He asked me if I was sure and I said yes. I sat in for the rest of the session but I honestly felt so disconnected that I didn't pay attention to most of what was going on.
I honestly do not blame my DM it was just a series of terrible rolls. My dice had started to turn on me and I should have changed them sooner. But I was seriously pissed at how I died. It would be one thing to die in a fight against the BBEG or even if i were attacked by some random monster or to sacrifice myself for the greater good but to fall thousands of feet to my death and the gas to be a harmless nuisance just makes me feel so... ugh. To add insult to injury I was playing the party cleric and the only source of healing for the party besides the paladin. I'm not worried about the character because I have a literal vault of different character ideas swimming in my head. My DM told me to take my time and if decide if I truly wanted to start a new character or if I would like to bring my character back but I dont know what do you think reddit? Please tell me someone else has had a death as horrible as this.
