Did Randy Gradishar really get all those tackles with the Orange Crush?

In Mike Klis's book about the top 50 Broncos he says one if the key reasons Gradishar hasn't made the hall of fame is because the voters don't believe he actually made all those tackles. And looking at the stats I can see where they're coming from, 2000 tackles in 10 years (with 14 game seasons!) is absolutely bananas.
So it there any truth to this? I've heard some NBA stats.recorders are overly generous to the home team but I've never heard that accusation against the broncos or any other NFL team.
