I'm at the beginning of my search for managing my pile of credit card debt following an extended medical issue. But I feel like all I'm finding are a lot of scammy companies. When I look at lists of 'best of', even from what should be reputable sources like Forbes, there is no agreement. And when I contacted the top rated one in the Forbes list, I got redirected from a .org to a .com, and within seconds got a phone call, text message, and email, all of which set off red flags.
I know there are state and federal lists of licensed nonprofits that do this work, as well as BBB ratings, but I feel like these are just a bare bare minimum, with plenty of room for perfectly legal tactics like hard sells and questionable advice about stopping payment. That scammy company I contacted was licensed and had a high BBB rating.
So are there reputable, useful, ratings for debt consolidation and management companies somewhere? (And I realize the irony of asking Reddit for trustworthy info :P)
