Hello all! I'm trying to hang two kayaks from my finished garage ceiling. The mounting directions for my kit say to drill into a single joist and then bolt in the pulley system. This makes sense, but, when I went to drill into the joist (found with my stud detector) I realized I couldn't go through. Long story short, I used a boroscope camera to go up a hole and see what was in the way. Turns out it seems as though my ceiling doesn't have traditional wood joists and instead has a sheet of metal with some kind of metal joist running along it. From my video feed I believe the setup is something like the following: _______^______^_______^______ where the '^' represents these metal beam joists. This took me by surprise and I haven't encountered this before. I did some googling and I found out that this is usually done in townhouses for fire safety, especially if there is a room sitting on top of the garage. The other option is it is there to guard against people accidentally drilling into pipes or electrical conduit. I could not ascertain if these were safe to mount things too, if it was the former. Based on the video feed and the picture I'm linking below, I do not believe this is there to protect electrical conduit or plumbing. So, is this as simple as getting metal drill bits and continuing the job or will these beam joists not support the weight?
βEDIT: Thank you for the replies everyone! Looks like I have some more investigative work ahead of me and probably need to think of a better solution than hanging from the ceiling. Based on what people have said here and drilling some more holes for my camera, it is probably fire barrier. β
