Edit - TLDR: How do I increase the number of stitches on my crocheted circle without increasing the size of the circle too much?
Hello! I've been crocheting for a while, but this is my first attempt at making my own pattern. I'd like to make a granny square with a sun inspired by the "Tangled" sun pattern (Photo Attached for context) for a larger WIP.
In order to do so I need a circle with 7 large "rays" and 7 small "rays" to match the pattern. However, I've struggling to get the sizing right. Depending on how I do the rays, the number of stitches of the final circle needs to be relatively large (60 st). With my current method (5mm hook) of using DC and doing standard circle increases with an initial MC with 12DC into it, the circle that allows me to reach the (current) 56 stitches, makes the circle way too large in comparison to my large rays (using Ch5 and then stitching to this and then attaching with sl st). I want the rays to be relatively large in order to fit the ratios of the original Tangled star. (Photo of current star attached below)
sorry for how blurry it is, i have drank so much coffee
I'm not sure how to achieve this larger ray affect, as if I increased the size of the rays (maybe using triple treble) then I would have to increase the number of stitches in the circle, therefore doing more rounds and thus making the circle bigger. Is it as simple as using SC or HDC for my circle instead of DC? I'm concerned that this would decrease the number of stitches I could initially crochet into the MC and therefore means that the number of rounds in my circle would be increased and could offset the benefits of using a smaller stitch?
It turns out, creating a pattern is very difficult, but I'm determined to do it, so any advice on how to solve this problem would be greatly appreciated. And if anyone wants a copy of the pattern once it's finally done please let me know.
