Question from a noob: Are there variants of Critical Theory with different philosophical underpinnings?
Post Body

Specifically, as I understand it (and I will be the first to admit I probably don't understand it fully), Critical Theory, as a discipline, is fundamentally based on Marxism. Without going into the validity of Marxism, it is not the only philosophical game in town. Are there disciplines that attempt to do what Critical Theory does (examine and critique societies and cultures, with the aim of bringing about change in those cultures), using its broad means (applying knowledge from the social sciences and the humanities), but with a different seed?
